Frank Forcella has been a Research Agronomist for the USDA-ARS Soils Lab in Morris, MN, for
33 years. He also is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics at
the University of Minnesota (St Paul, MN). His research specialties include weed science and,
more recently, new oilseed crops and their associated pollinators. Although most of his career
has been spent in the Upper Midwest, he also has had international teaching and research
experiences in the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, and Spain. He relishes international
exchanges and has hosted 18 long-term international visitors at his isolated lab in Minnesota,
including two Fulbright Fellows and one Foreign Agricultural Service Fellow. Ten years ago, he
and now-retired colleague, Dean Peterson, were joking about how to add value to various
agricultural residues. The idea of pelletized grit, sand-blasting, and selective weed control arose
from that light-hearted discussion. Today, he will describe the evolution of that idea.
