{"id":9089,"date":"2022-09-02T12:11:04","date_gmt":"2022-09-02T16:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/applied-ecology-new\/?p=9089"},"modified":"2022-09-06T09:00:10","modified_gmt":"2022-09-06T13:00:10","slug":"saving-magnificent-snail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/applied-ecology\/news\/saving-magnificent-snail\/","title":{"rendered":"Saving a Magnificent Snail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"\">The magnificent ramshorn snail or <\/span><i><span style=\"\">Planorbella magnifica, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"\">which loosely translates to <\/span><i><span style=\"\">flat-beautiful magnificent<\/span><\/i><span style=\"\">, certainly lives up to its effusive names. This rare, freshwater, air-breathing snail is the largest <\/span><i><span style=\"\">Planorbidae<\/span><\/i><span style=\"\"> in North America, with a shell that can coil out to slightly larger than a half-dollar coin. Today, ramshorns are only found in captivity and their limited population of 1,000 snails exists in three locations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">They are currently proposed to be listed as \u201cendangered\u201d under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, but researchers at NC&#160;State\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/applied-ecology\/\">Department of Applied Ecology<\/a> have a plan to bring this snail back from the brink.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">The ramshorn has not been observed in the wild since 2004, despite an extensive survey effort to locate any remaining snail strongholds in southeastern North Carolina. The three captive populations can trace their origin back to the single <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/story\/2014-07\/one-mans-mission-save-magnificent-mollusk\"><span style=\"\">heroic mission by conservationist Andy Wood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> of the Coastal Plain Conservation Group. Wood ventured out during Cat. 3 Hurricane Fran\u2019s landfall to collect as many ramshorns as he could find \u2013 of which only 12 survived \u2013 and has tended to the snails ever since. Photo provided by Greg Cope.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"\">A 10-year NC Department of Transportation grant, titled, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"\">Research for propagation and restoration of the Magnificent Ramshorn aquatic snail associated with conservation efforts at the Yates Mill Aquatic Conservation Center\u201d is the fundamental step towards fulfilling the reintroduction effort being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/press-release\/2022-08\/magnificent-ramshorn-proposed-listing-and-critical-habitat\"><span style=\"\">proposed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> (USFW<\/span><span style=\"\">S). The bureau aims to designate 739 acres of ponds as critical habitat in Brunswick County to prepare for the recovery of the species.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Prof. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/applied-ecology\/people\/greg-cope\/\"><span style=\"\">Greg Cope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\"> is leading the team of applied ecologists set to save the ramshorn from extinction, including AEC alum, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/applied-ecology\/people\/jmarcham\/\"><span style=\"\">Dr. Jennifer Archambault<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\">, who is the USFWS Recovery Coordinator for this species. They will work with Chris Eads, who is the caretaker of one of the last three captive populations at NC&#160;State.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">\u201cWe are thankful for the efforts of Andy Wood, Chris Eads, and NC Wildlife Resources Commission colleagues Rachael Hoch and Brena Jones, who have all helped to maintain the three captive populations of snails over the years,\u201d says Cope. \u201cIt is thanks to them that we even have this opportunity today to restore and reintroduce the species back into their native habitats in eastern North Carolina.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">This is just one of many projects to be carried out at the new NC&#160;State&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wakegov.com\/departments-government\/facilities-design-construction\/facilities-design-construction-projects\/construction-projects\/yates-mill-aquatic-species-propagation-facility\"><span style=\"\">Yates Mill Aquatic Conservation Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"\">, slated to open in Spring 2023.
