Office of Student Mentoring

Cultivate. Grow. Flourish.

About

Administered by a board of directors and the ABM Undergraduate Programs Office, the Office of Student Mentoring (OSM) provides students with the resources, personalized plans and monitoring necessary to be competitive in the job market upon graduation.

The OSM offers internship and job resources, specialized skills workshops, research opportunities, job shadowing, networking events, career exploration, mingling events and a mentorship program. The office was established with generous support from Robert “Robbie” Fulford, a North Carolina entrepreneur and NC State alumnus who serves on the board of directors. The OSM board includes ABM alumni and agriculture industry professionals.

Trips

The OSM organizes road trips every semester for ABM students. The tours expand students’ professional network and make connections for internships. The road trips allow students to visit business leaders and receive behind-the-scene tours of agribusinesses.  The tours often includes visits with Agricultural Business Management alumni at their businesses.

The bus leaves early in the morning and returns in the evening. There is no cost to participants. The trips give ABM majors an opportunity to get to know each other and faculty members in an informal setting.  Agribusiness leaders, government officials and CALS and NC State administrators often go along on the trips.

Down East

Students visited with various farms in Eastern NC and had the opportunity to speak and network with agribusiness owners and leaders in the community.

Mountain

Students toured the agricultural side of the Biltmore as well as a fish hatchery and apple orchard, while networking with top Western NC agribusiness owners and leaders.

Events

Throughout the year, the OSM organizes engaging events for students to network and hear from industry leaders. Examples of events held include a Farm Bill Speaker Series, professional networking event and an address from NC Commissioner Steve Troxler.

Professional Mentoring Center

The OSM has started a Professional Mentoring Program where students will be paired with an industry professional to further their networking skills, guide them as they move toward young professional life and help answer questions they might have about the agricultural industry.
