Phillips Shines During the Pandemic; Now a University Outstanding Teacher

ARE Senior Lecturer Jonathan Phillips was recognized for his outstanding teaching by the university. He has been chosen as one of the 2020-2021 University Outstanding Teachers and becomes a member of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers for the duration of his faculty appointment at NC State. This university award recognizes a few select faculty recognized as outstanding teachers by their college in the fall.

Phillips says, “Students have many options when selecting universities and majors. I strive to make NC State and Agricultural and Resource Economics competitive by providing quality education in an environment that is welcoming to all.”

For 21 years, Jonathan Phillips has been teaching in the undergraduate Agricultural Business Management program and the Agricultural Institute program. Jonathan remarked that a lot has changed in that time. He explained, “The teaching environment is constantly evolving, but there is one constant I can count on. Every year students teach me something new.”

Phillips plans to continue designing courses to develop skills desired by today’s employers, entrepreneurs, and other departmental stakeholders. He also intends to continue to provide leadership to the Delta Tau Alpha honor society with a focus on professional development.

Kathryn Boys, associate professor, stated that “Jonathan is an important member of ARE’s teaching faculty in our undergraduate program. Some of my advisees have mentioned how much they enjoy and benefit from his sections of Introductory Microeconomics (ARE 201) and Human Resource Management (ARE 332).”

Congratulations Professor Phillips!
