AEE Graduate Degree Requirements and Course Schedule

Requirements

Master of Science in Agricultural and Extension Education

  • AEE 501 – Foundations of Agricultural & Extension Education
  • AEHS 578 – Scientific Inquiry in Agricultural & Extension Education
  • Choose one additional course in Research or Statistics (3 hours):
    • ST 507 – Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences I
    • ST 511 – Statistical Methods for Researchers I
  • Choose one of the following (3 hours):
    • AEHS 777 – Qualitative Research Methods in the Agricultural & Life Sciences
    • ST 507 – Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences I
    • ST 511 – Statistical Methods for Researchers I
  • Curriculum/Program Planning (3 hours). Choose one of the following:
    • AEE 521 – Program Planning in Agricultural & Extension Education
    • AEE 524 – Coordinating the High School Agricultural Education Program
    • AEHS 529 – Curriculum Development in Agricultural & Extension Education
  • Instructional Methodology (3 hours). Choose one of the following:
    • AEE 523 – Adult Education in Agriculture
    • AEE 535 – Teaching Agriculture in Secondary Schools (recommended for those with no teaching experience)
  • AEHS 735 – Effective Teaching in Agriculture & Life Sciences (recommended for those who desire to teach in higher education)

AEHS 695 – Master’s Thesis Research (6 hours)

Students are allowed to take 9 hours of elective courses. These can be in AEE/AEHS or in disciplines such as animal science, crop science, horticultural science, entomology, forestry, and youth development and family life education, among others.

Although it is not required, students can also declare a minor in another discipline. Students will need to take 9 hours in a specialty and work with a professor from that area.

Master of Agricultural and Extension Education

Where there are choices, students should select courses appropriate for their concentration: agricultural education or extension education.

  • AEE 501 – Foundations of Agricultural and Extension Education (3 hours)
  • AEHS 578 – Scientific Inquiry in Agricultural and Extension Education (3 hours)
  • Curriculum/Program Planning (3 hours). Choose one of the following:
    • AEE 521 – Program Planning in Agricultural & Extension Education
    • AEE 524 – Coordinating the High School Agricultural Education Program
    • AEHS 529 – Curriculum Development in Agricultural & Extension Education
  • Instructional Methodology (3 hours). Choose one of the following:
    • AEE 523 – Adult Education in Agriculture
    • AEE 535 – Teaching Agriculture. in Secondary Schools (recommended for those with no teaching experience)
    • AEHS 735 – Effective Teaching in Agriculture & Life Sciences (recommended for those who desire to teach in higher education)
  • Culminating Master’s Project (3 hours). Choose one of the following:
    • AEHS 620 – Special Problems in Agricultural and Extension Education
    • AEHS 693 – Master’s Supervised Research

Students will take 15 hours of elective courses. These courses must be at the 500 level or above and can be taken in AEE/AEHS or from other academic disciplines subject to approval of the students’ advisor and DGP.

Doctoral Program

  • AEE 501 Foundations of Agricultural and Extension Education (3 hours)
  • AEHS 578 Scientific Inquiry in Agricultural and Extension Education (3 hours)
  • ST 511 Statistical Methods For Researchers I (3 hours)
  • ST 512 Statistical Methods For Researchers II (3 hours)

Select at least two courses below:

  • AEHS 777 Qualitative Research Methods in Agricultural & Life Sciences (3 hours)
  • ED 710 Applied Quantitative Methods in Education I (3 hours)
  • ED 730 Introduction to Qualitative Research in Education (3 hours)
  • ED 731 – Advanced Qualitative Research and Data Analysis in Education (3 hours)

Students will repeat the following course to meet 12 credit hours:

  • AEE 895 Doctoral Dissertation Research (1-9 hours)

Elective Courses are determined in conjunction with the academic committee to meet the 72 total hours.

Although it is not required, students can also declare a minor in another discipline. Students will need to take 12 hours in a specialty and work with a professor from that area.

AG*IDEA Courses and Tuition Waivers are Not Covered

Note that AG*IDEA courses in the AEE master’s and doctoral programs cannot be covered by tuition waivers.
