The Agricultural and Human Sciences (AHS) would like to announce that Mary Kate Morgan was selected as the winner of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Assistant award for the 2021-2022 academic year. The CALS awards one Outstanding Graduate Student Teacher Award annually. The award recognizes teaching excellence by graduate student teaching assistants in the College. Criteria for selection included evidence of teaching effectiveness, academic scholarships, dedication, and enthusiasm for professional development.

Over the last four semesters Morgan has served as the teaching assistant (Fall 2020) and lead instructor (Spring 2021, Fall 2021, Spring 2022) for AEE 226 – Computer Applications and Information Technology in Agricultural and Extension Education. She had the formidable task of teaching throughout the pandemic and was a major contributor in transitioning the course, which had only been delivered in a face-to-face format with a laboratory component, to remote delivery during the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters. With a return to campus in Fall 2021, Morgan was responsible for teaching two sections of the course each semester, one on-campus and one online. During her time as a TA, she taught over 200 students. The nomination team comments “Mary Kate has been a truly exceptional graduate student and valuable contributor to both the Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State University.”

Morgan stated “I am honored to receive this award as there are so many phenomenal graduate student teachers in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. I am especially grateful to Dr. Wendy Warner and Dr. Joseph Donaldson for seeing potential in my teaching abilities and encouraging me to apply for this award”. Morgan also recognizes that she had an amazing team around her. She notes “Additionally, I am thankful to my undergraduate teaching assistants Karis Haigler, Ruth Fitzgerald, and Sierra Everhart for helping to make AEE 226 successful. Finally, I am grateful to the students of AEE 226 for making me a better teacher and inspiring me daily!”

Congratulations on your recognition Mary Kate and your continued success.
