RESEARCH INTERESTS

Chickens, turkeys, and ducks supply about 25-30% of the animal protein consumed in the world. This statistic is the result of an 80-year transformation of the poultry industry from backyard flocks to a highly sophisticated, efficient, and economically important industry organized on an international scale. Much of the growth and development of the poultry industry can be attributed to the application of the principles of contemporary biology to genetic selection programs, to the immunology of disease control, and to nutrition programs needed to maintain high levels of production.

The major emphasis of the current research program is on the development of a novel method of gene transfer for the chicken and the application of avian biotechnology to biomedicine and agriculture. Recent work on the production of germline chimeras suggests that the use of cells from the early blastoderm as well as isolated primordial germ cells could be used to insert DNA into the avian germline. The culture of avian embryonic stem cells and primordial germ cells is now under investigation using several approaches. In addition, investigations on the origin of primordial germ cells in the developing embryo offer additional clues to the development of transgenic poultry.
