About the Department

Welcome to the Department of Horticultural Science in NC State's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Our mission is to provide innovative teaching, research, and outreach in the art and science of horticulture. In partnership with the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, the Department is recognized, both nationally and internationally, as a leader in creative research in a broad range of applied and basic research. Areas of expertise include biotechnology, ornamentals, pest (disease, insect) control, plant breeding and genetics, fruit production, floriculture and green house production, plant nutrition, weed science, urban horticulture, specialty crop production, organic and sustainable agriculture, substrates for greenhouse and nursery production, and vegetable production.

The major goal of the Department is to meet the ever changing challenges of a highly competitive and technological world through constant evaluation and adjustment of its programs and positions. The Department of Horticultural Science serves the people of the state, country and world within the concept of the land grant mission upon which North Carolina State University was founded.
