The tobacco whitefly, Bemisia tabaci biotype B, was listed in the top 100 invasive species and attack more than 600 species including food, fiber and ornamental species. Saliva of sucking insect play an important role in their host adaptation. We identified several enzymes in the saliva of B. tabaci. Induced host resistance and RNAi experiments showed those enzymes are crucial to whitefly feeding. The cDNA library of salivary gland from B. tabaci are being constructed and we’ll screen the key salivary protein further more. The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) engineered by transgenic insects is a novel and effective method to control pest in wide area. I’m currently working with Postdoctoral Associate Dr. Li Fang to create transgenic strains of Screwworm flies, Cochliomyia hominivorax. Then this method will be applied to Bactrocera dorsalis and Cydia pomonella, which are serious invasive species in China right now.
