North Carolina State University - Department Of Genetics

The Department of Genetics consists of a vigorous and highly interactive group of scientists with a focus in quantitative, developmental and computational genetics. The department also administers outstanding undergraduate and graduate training programs in genetics, partly supported by an NIH training grant on 'The Genetic Architecture of Quantitative Traits'.

Genetics Leads NCSU in Federal Stimulus Funding Genetics researchers have secured over $2.6 million of the $23 million in Federal stimulus funding awarded to NCSU through October 2009, the largest amount of any department at NCSU.

Faculty in the Department of Genetics have been awarded $2,648,621 in Federal stimulus funding as of October 2009. These funds will support research, training, and the acquisition of equipment. This represents over 10% of the total Federal stimulus funding at NCSU, and the largest amount brought in by any other department. Of the $2.6 million awarded to the Department of Genetics, $1.4 million is from the National Institutes of Health and $1.2 million is from the National Science Foundation. These awards will stimulate new discoveries and advances in understanding how hormones regulate plant growth, in elucidating how genetic architecture controls variation in phenotypes, and in developing new paradigms for drug safety testing. Additionally, stimulus funding will support the recruitment of new faculty to the department. Three faculty members in the Department of Genetics, Drs. Alonso, Mackay and Threadgill, are among the top recipients of the Federal stimulus funding received at NCSU.
