Academic and/or Research Interests
My research focuses on understanding the mechanisms by which floral organs are specified and formed in Arabidopsis thaliana. I specifically am interested in two tissues the shoot apical meristem, from which all above ground plant structures arise, and the carpel margin meristem, from which the ovules or seed precursors arise. I have look at elucidating the members of regulatory complexes that are critical for the formation of the shoot apical meristem. It was previously determined that the gene STM and at least one of the BLH family members is required for proper meristem formation, however our lab has shown that proper formation also requires the activity of two other transcription factors, SEU and SLK2. We are trying to determine if these all function together in a complex or in parallel to affect meristem formation and maintenance.

SEU also affects the carpel margin meristem (CMM), and we have shown that another transcription factor, ANT is also causes minor disruptions of the the CMM. The loss of both SEU and ANT has a synergistic phenotype where there is a more than additive disruption of the CMM. I am currently in the process of completing transcript profiling of the carpel in order to examine transcripts that are up or down regulated in this tissues between different genotypes (wt, seu, ant, seu ant). After confirmation we are gong to examine genes that come out of this study to see if we can incorporate them into our model of the mechanism by which the CMM is formed in Arabidopsis thaliana
