SEVEN KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL GRADUATE PROGRAM

  1. Keep in communication with your advisor.
  2. Take responsibility for your program.  Take the initiative: identify courses, potential committee members, and consult with your advisor.
  3. Start your research as soon as possible in consultation with your advisor.  Maintain a well-organized and detailed lab notebook/research record.
  4. You will be expected to juggle three major responsibilities at all times.  These will include research, teaching, and coursework.  If you are not teaching, then you will have presentations and/or writing to accompany your research and coursework responsibilities instead.
  5. Get to know other graduate students in and out of your discipline.  Look to them also for lab assistance and support.
  6. Read papers both inside and outside of your field.
  7. Remember that NCSU owns the data you produce.
