The Graduate Education Committee, which is composed of a cross-section of faculty within the Department, reviews applications and makes recommendations on admission to the Dean of the Graduate School.
Recommendation for admission or denial is based on an estimate of the applicant's ability to do graduate work and on the ability of the Department to absorb and support additional students. The Graduate Education Committee also has the responsibility to suggest potential academic advisers when there has been no prior contact by the applicant with a particular faculty member.
Factors considered in the evaluation of applicants for full admission include:
**On average, students who enter into the Animal Science graduate program have a combined GRE quantitative plus verbal score of at least 300. MAS applicants are encouraged, but not required, to take the GRE.
Generally, applicants to be considered for full admission must have a bachelor's degree in Animal Science or closely related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum grade point average of B (3.0).
The GRE is required by the Department of Animal Science of each applicant in the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy programs.
The Graduate School also requires a minimum Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 80 on the Internet-based Test (iBT). Minimum test scores for each section: Listening, Reading Writing, Speaking is 18.
The current computer - and paper - based versions of the TOEFL test will be given until the iBT version is implemented in a particular location. A minimum of 550 on the written or 213 on the computer exam for admission of students whose previous degree was not received from a university that uses English as its primary language for classroom teaching. Provisional admission may be granted to applicants whose overall academic records or test scores are marginal, but who have shown improvement or other evidence of potential.
