Donald E. Moreland creates scholarship

Donald E Moreland

An N.C. State University alumnus and retired faculty member has established a scholarship endowment fund that will benefit undergraduates in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ plant sciences curricula. Dr. Donald E. Moreland, N.C. State professor emeritus, with his wife, Verdie, has donated funds to create the Donald E. and Verdie S. Moreland - John T. Caldwell Alumni Scholarship Endowment in the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation Inc., in cooperation with the NCSU Alumni Association.

CALS undergraduates currently enrolled in crop science, plant biology and horticultural science have first eligibility to receive the scholarship, with second priority given to students in genetics and biochemistry.

Moreland, of Raleigh, holds three N.C. State degrees: a 1949 bachelor’s and 1950 master’s, both in forestry, and a 1953 Ph.D. in plant physiology. He worked 43 years as a plant physiologist with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture while holding a simultaneous appointment as a research professor at N.C. State, where he served as a faculty member teaching crop science, botany, forestry and toxicology. He became an emeritus professor in 1995.

A weed-control specialist, Moreland authored more than 100 scientific papers and earned induction into numerous scientific societies. In addition to this endowment, he and his wife have established facility, staff and book endowments with the NCSU Libraries and fellowships and scholarships in three colleges.

Moreland created the new $100,000 scholarship endowment in January, along with Dr Johnny Wynne, CALS dean; Dr. Lennie Barton, NCSU Alumni Association executive director; Dr. Kenneth Esbenshade, CALS associate dean and director of Academic Programs; Nevin Kessler, vice chancellor of University Advancement; and Keith Oakley, president of the N.C. Agricultural Foundation.
